Take the First Step Toward Excellence

Track & Field

WYSI Track & Field is a fundamental skills-building program open to athletes ages 7+ (age as of December 31, 2025). Athletes learn the basics and technique for the events they are interested in, supported by volunteer parent coaches who have a passion for the sport. Parent coaches are always needed, whether you have experience or are willing to learn alongside your athlete and a head coach.

League Overview

General Information

Welcome to WYSI Track & Field!

For 2025 we are building on the success of the program in recent years. The program will be open to all athletes ages 7+ on or before December 31, 2025.

This program is very much a fundamental skills building program filled with volunteer parent coaches who have a passion for the sport. Your athlete will learn the fundamental skills for events that they are interested in. We are always looking for parent coaches with experience or a willingness to learn the skills alongside their athletes and a head coach.

Parents Meeting / Field Event Try-Out: Tuesday, April 15th

We will discuss the season in greater detail at mandatory Parents Meeting will be scheduled at the Westfield High School Stadium. While the parent meeting is going on, your athlete will have the opportunity to try out any or all of the field events. The goal for try out night is to narrow down what events your athlete would like to focus on during practices and meets. If your athlete is not interested in field events, they do not need to attend. The parent meeting will still be mandatory.

Practices, Meets, and Additional Information

  • Practices:  Practices will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 8:00 p.m. During these practices, athletes will remain at their focused event until 7:30, then the last 30 minutes of practice they can transition to field events, starting blocks, or relay baton work, or for non-field event athletes, a plyometrics workout.

It is not required to attend every practice but encouraged to participate whenever possible.

We will encourage athletes to focus on UP TO three events for the season. Athletes should choose one event to focus on for each practice which will allow our coaches to teach proper form/technique for each discipline. They will remain with that focus event until 7:30. They have the opportunity to move to another event in the last 30 minutes of practice.

In-House Meets: We will host one in-house meet. Athletes will have an opportunity to try a variety of events and get used to the flow of a track meet. This event is just with our team and is relatively laid back and will show the athletes how a meet is run.

Indiana Youth Track Association Meets (IYTA)

All athletes in our club will have the opportunity to participate in four (4) local Saturday meets as part of the IYTA (Indiana Youth Track Association). Your WYSI registration allows each athlete to pick up to three events, not including relays, to participate in. THESE MEETS ARE VERY LONG. They start early and events run throughout the day. Your athlete may have a couple of hours in between events.

INTERESTED IN COACHING?

Without our parent coaches our program cannot run efficiently or offer all the track and field events for our athletes.

If you are interested in helping to coach or volunteer, please contact the commissioner and let them know how you would like to help. You can also register to volunteer during athlete registration. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY, just a willingness to learn alongside your athlete and a head coach.

We always need coaches with experience in the following areas:
long jump, high jump, javelin, shot put, discus, and starting blocks.

A WYSI Background Check is REQUIRED for all coaches. Please complete the background check a week before the first practice in order to be eligible to coach.
